Gender and Legislative Behavior in Post-Communist Ukraine (Frank C. THAMES, Mykhail RYBALKO)
A significant number of gender scholars focus on the substantive effects of women’s representation. A good portion of this literature focuses on whether female legislators behave in ways that foster women’s representation. We argue one area that needs more research is to understand the relationship between female legislators and their parties. Through an analysis of party discipline in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada between 1994 and 2007, we show how party discipline varies by gender within different electoral and partisan contexts.
