The EU enlargement and the Romanian-Moldovan Border (Radu SIMIONESCU)
This essay examines the impacts of European Union enlargement and its assets through a multi-layered study of the Romania case from the beginning in the early 1990s till the present. By examining this historically important case, I analyze also the problematic border with the Republic of Moldova; clarify what this border mean from the historical, European and Schengen space point of view. The time period studied in this paper includes the integration of Romania in the EU but also covers two important parts: (1) the European Union border with Moldova, and its consequences for the population of the two countries, moreover this border will become from 2012 the limit of the Schengen zone, and for this lot of measures were implemented and (2) the relations between Romania and Moldova, taking into consideration the historical geographical description, the economical and infrastructural characteristics and the statements and agreements regarding across border transfer. By propelling change in an array of different institutions, the security of the zone can become an important objective for the European Union.
